Newsbun is a satirical news app for adults. This page says, in plain words, what the app stores on your device, what it sends to our servers and to other companies, how long it is kept, and how to remove it. No account is needed to use Newsbun.
Kept only on your device
Your reading streak, saved cards, reactions, display and sound settings, notification choice, the city you type for local stories (if you type one), your age band (if you pick one) and the optional press pass (name, email, phone, if you fill them in) are stored in your browser or app storage on your device. We do not receive them, and Newsbun never asks for your device location.
What is sent to our servers
- Alerts (push notifications), only if you turn them on. Your browser creates a push subscription: a delivery address and keys that belong to your device, plus the interests you chose, if any, and the time the record last changed. We keep it so we can send you notifications. It is a device identifier, so we treat it as personal data. It is kept until you remove it (see "Your control and deletion") and in any case expires about 400 days after it last changed.
- Reports. If you tap the report button on a card, we store the card, the reason you chose and the time. The report sheet has no text box, and we store neither your IP address nor any code made from it in the report. To limit abuse, the server briefly uses a scrambled, daily-changing form of your IP address as the key of a counter that expires after two days; that is a pseudonymous identifier, not an anonymous one. Report records are kept for about 400 days so we can look into repeat abuse and publish corrections. A report is not linked to your alerts subscription, so "Delete my data" cannot find it; to have a particular report removed, write to us with the card and roughly when you sent it.
- Usage counts. The app sends counts such as how often a card category or a card was viewed, reacted to, shared or saved, how often The Wire or the original source was opened, how many stories a visit read (in ranges: 1, 2 to 3, 4 to 7, 8 or more) and the hour of the visit in India time. No account, cookie or device ID is attached, and the counts are added into daily totals that expire after 120 days. These counts are part of how the app works and there is no switch to turn them off inside the app. Your IP address is used for a few moments, in memory only, to limit abuse and is not stored with the counts.
Records saved by earlier versions of Newsbun may still hold more than the above: an alerts record can include a name, email, phone, age or city, and a report can include a scrambled, daily-changing form of the sender's IP address. They stay until they expire (about 400 days at most). We can remove one earlier only if we can find it: for an alerts record, write to us with the email or phone number you gave; for a report, with the card and roughly when you sent it.
We do not sell your data, show third-party ads or set advertising cookies.
Other companies that receive data
- Google Fonts serves the app's typefaces. Your browser contacts Google when the app opens, so Google sees your IP address and device details.
- Push services. Alerts are delivered through the service run by your browser or phone maker (for example Google). That service holds your push address.
- Cloudflare hosts Newsbun (the pages, media and the small database that holds alert subscriptions and reports) and, like any host, may keep standard server logs that include IP addresses. Data may be processed outside India.
- When you tap a source link you leave Newsbun and the publisher's own privacy policy applies.
AI and satire
Newsbun is satire and commentary for entertainment. Pictures, videos and some text are made or assisted by AI and are labelled in the app. Newsbun is not a source of record: please check the linked source for anything that matters.
Adults only
Newsbun is intended for adults (18 and over) and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child's data has been sent to us, contact us and we will delete it.
Your control and deletion
- Delete my data (Profile): while you are online, this asks our server to delete your push subscription and the interests saved with it, then clears your saved cards, reactions, settings, notification history and the offline copies of the app from that device. It does not remove reports you filed or usage counts (see above). If the server cannot be reached, nothing is cleared and you can try again.
- Turn alerts off (Profile): removes this device from our alerts list and cancels the browser subscription, and leaves your other settings alone. You can also switch notifications off for Newsbun in your device or browser settings; our record is then removed when the push service tells us the address is no longer valid, or after about 400 days.
- Usage counts carry no identifier we could use to find yours, so they cannot be deleted one by one; they expire after 120 days. Report records expire after about 400 days, or earlier if you write to us about a particular report (see Reports above).
- To ask for access, correction or deletion, write to the contact below.
Changes
If a future version adds accounts or other features that collect personal data, we will update this page before those features start collecting it, and change the date above.
